My Private Classroom For Marketers

Hey Gang...

By now you know that Twitter is all the rage just as I predicted a year ago :)

But what I did not expect is the way in which the game has played out.

I'd love to hear your observations on how people are hooking up on Twitter and what you can see about the nature of the relationships being formed.

There is a science to this process.

Let's decode it as a group.

Why are some people out on the dance floor going to town and others wallflowers at the Twitter party and how can you get more traffic and build your name out there.

When you reply please be sure to put your twitter link so we can all follow one another

Mine is www.Twitter.com/DianeHochman

Let's really dig into this and uncover stuff we all can use to advance our businesses.

Also..if you have a twitter training video feel free to embed it in a post here.

Let's Roll!!!!

To me, Twitter is like being at a huge cocktail party with many conversations taking place at the same time. I notice there is an unspoken etiquette in communicating with people. I think it's great for the variety and amount of information available. However, I do not spend much time there. Socializing is not considered work, and if I am not working, I am not beiong productive. If there is no production, then I don't get paid. So, I have chosen to spend more time where I can work and find prospects for my products.

I have read that it takes a long time to develop relationships in social networks. I have certain times of the day where I will engage in social networking. It's not where the greater portion of my day is spent. But, I do feel I need the social networks.

I have had a very positive experience with Twitter driving traffic to one of my Web sites. In fact, I was shocked to find about 20 percent of traffic comes directly from Twitter right now, and I didn't start that long ago. It's actually a perfect outlet for what I do - I publish a news-based e-zine, MichiganWomensForum.com. I update the site with stories, calendar, etc. about every 10-14 days, and in between, I tweet stories by, for and about women in Michigan from other news sources. I also interact with others not necessarily from MI, which has been a lot of fun, and I've learned a ton from other tweets with links to articles on social media, marketing, etc.

Having said that, I don't think Twitter would work for every business. I, too, get a weird feeling from those tweets that are obviously sales pitches - and I've noticed others tend to label those as "spam" pretty quickly. My impression has been that there is a kind of unspoken code of conduct, even though there are people with tons of followers who are obviously there only to recruit new followers. I'm not sure the benefit of having 20,000 people on your list - or even 2,000 for that matter, it's way too much for me to keep up with. I am lately exploring Twitter groups and hash tags to keep up with conversations on specific topics. Seems to make it more useful for me.

I'm on Twitter as:

TWITTER is yet only another "bridge" to drive HUGE amounts of traffic to whatever you are promoting. And yes, if you play by the RULES people will not SHUN you. Instead, they will LOVE you and probably take a look at what you are doing or offering. Use the 80/20 rule: 80% socializing, 20% business. Treat people EXACTLY like if you were meeting them at a social event. Too many people believe that the internet is a "joke" and that you really cannot make real-life business deals with social media, this is very far from the truth. Twitter is a place where you can #1 Get to know people and #2 Place your ad in front of THOUSANDS of people who actually can CHOOSE whether they want to see it or not. It is also a great place to see what your M3 and MPC friends are up to!
