My Private Classroom For Marketers

One of the things I like about this community is a sense of eagerness to share and learn new information with each other.

As an experienced video producer, I help small business owners get more exposure to the web in an authentic way. Hopefully, in the near future, I will be posting some of my own video modules to teach you about certain aspects of video production. While the efforts will be focused primarily on developing and delivering content, I will also spend a fair amount of time on production technique.

A fascinating thing has happened after I first created this post. I have received quite a few inquires from people interested in learning more about about my topic. My original intention was to announce that I was about to start production and I needed more input from you to make sure I was on the right track. Please continue to ask away! I use some of this information as a guide on what to topics to develop in what order. I love to answer your questions and I regularly check this post on daily basis. You can count on me to answer your questions promptly. In fact, as long as Diane is cool with it, we can just keep this thread going as long as you like.

You can ask me technical questions on audio, lighting, editing and even shooting techniques. Not sure how to develop your message? Ask me and I'll give you honest feedback. - Mike

Hi Mike. You are definitely a pro at video production. Please do not second guess yourself. You actually DO know what people need to learn and hear about video production. You have the tips and hints of years of experience dealing with mega-personalities and town folk, like me. It is through such one-on-one experience that you have answered our questions and made us look really good on film. Therefore, if you give the community these hints, like what you have given me personally in a video session, then you will be delivering just what we need. From there, comments and suggestions can come in as feedback, to move you on to the next basic video production session. I look forward to seeing what you do. in health and in light, Debby [PS you can check out the fab video's Mike created for me at www.TriangleHomeopathicCenter.com]

Hi Stephanie,
I'm confused on the video link you sent me.(it says from Stephanie) Did you shoot this and you are asking me my input?

Please clarify a little background on the video before I rip it apart...I'm just kidding :) I won't do that but I do have some suggestions for Ray as he did say it was his first video. Is this message from Ray?

As far as natural, here is one my YouTube Channels for local businesses I'm recording. http://www.youtube.com/user/trianglemotiontv.

Each of these people have never been on camera before but we coached them on camera to be authentic and believable and natural as a business owner making their pitch. All of these people were VERY nervous but we helped them through it.

I want to respond but first help me understand your situation a little better.
For example, when you are on camera, are you nervous? How many takes did the video clip take? Do you forget what to say? do you feel like you fumble what you say? Are you confident in the subject matter? Was this video shot on a green screen?..whatever background you can give me would help. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, I'm brand new at all of this. I would like to know how to learn all there is to know about making my videos professionally, and attractive to my targeted audiance. I'm very serious about building a sucsessfull business and I want to do it right. I don't want to start by putting off my targeted audiance. Thank you Glenna Lucille Frazier.

Hi Glenna,
My program (when it is ready - hopefully soon) will focus on conveying you in an authentic way. It will always be more about the message than the quality. However, I will teach you some great low cost techniques to make your videos look and sound better. Why do I think this is important?...Because I believe the space we all work in will become more crowded (over the next several years) and the competition (or noise) competing for people's attention more become quite fierce with video.

That said, I think we are in the days of the "low hanging fruit". So, as E-commerce on the internet matures, so will the sophistication of the consumer. I believe it is inevitable with technological advances.

For now, you need to focus on your key messages to your customer. Target only those customers you are looking for - the ones who need what you are promoting. Don't worry about other people. You can't be all things to all people. If writing is not your thing, OUTSOURCE it to someone who can help you. Start with your story and why you chose your business opportunity. The idea is to paint a picture that others can relate to and connect with you.

Think about Diane Hochman (love ya Diane :) ), she connects with people everyday using video very effectively because she is authentic. Diane speaks to people like they are standing in front of her so you begin to focus on her messaging like you are the only one she is talking to. It works for Diane and video has effectively worked for her for some time now.

So, my advice, if you are new in business, focus on your message. Keep your messages short so your viewers want more and ultimately opt into your business to find out more.

BTW, I looked at your profile. GET YOUR OWN DOMAIN right away. Now is the time to start branding yourself. Business opportunities and products come and go but you don't have to.
People will follow you but not always your business.

Lastly, developing your brand will take time. Remember: How do you move a mountain?
...one shovel at a time. Pace yourself. Don't let overwhelm you. - Mike

Hi Mike, Greg is my name. I have zero knowledge of video and the web. I have watched you tube a bit but don't understand taking my camera and my film and what happens to put that on the net. Does it change the format. Can I save a you tube video "training" to my computer to use when I am not on the net?

Lots of unknowns from my seat.

Thanks Mike

Hi Greg,
Short answer: YouTube converts videos from any format to a FLV or Flash format. Here is an explanation of what Flash is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Video

There are many ways to download Youtube videos to your desktop. Start by Googling it and you will see what I mean. However, let me caution you: some of the free ones are way more trouble than they are worth because they are so full of pop ups and who knows what you'll wish you had never done it. Also, Youtube gets to many of them and disables the websites for legal reasons.

I use a program that has multiple functions. Downloading and converting is one of them. But, I also paid for the program. If you are looking for something free, here is one I found and briefly tested on my computer. All appears to be safe and stable but here is my disclaimer: download at your own risk - I cannot be responsible for what you download. http://www.xilisoft.com/download-youtube-video.html

This free app was simple to install, easy to understand and had it's own FLV (or Flash) player. While your mouse is on your desktop, right click and create new folder. Save all of your videos to that folder so you can find them quickly.

Hope that helps.

I would like to see you do a video on how to do a high quality video to upload to video sites such as you tube

Thanks Joe, a friend of mine and I are currently doing compression tests and research to share the best information we can about that. This is a tricky one because there is not only one answer.

Having said that, let me ask you a question, when you say "high quality video", are you saying high resolution video? (HD quality?). If so, your question concerns taking high resolution video (say 1280x720 for example), compressing with the highest quality in smallest file size for you to upload.

For now, let me at least get you thinking about one of the best encoding compressors (called a codec) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264. Your goal is convert the highest quality image to the lowest quality data rate...not always an easy feat but the H264 codec is will help get you there. Play around with BIT RATE in the range of 400-1000 bps while keeping your FRAME RATE as close to original as possible. If you recorded in high definition, start by reducing your resolution size to 1/2 it's original size and that will make a big difference in your file size.

There are many video converters available now which help you do this. Or, your editng program may give you the ability to export direct from your project. - Mike
